Repair or Replace a Dishwasher?

Short answer

Drain problems, a failed pump, a water inlet valve, a door latch, a heating part or a control fault are typically repairable, and fixing them is often reasonable when the tub and racks are in good condition. Replacement makes more sense when the tub itself leaks because it is cracked or rusted, when several parts are failing at once, or when parts for your model are no longer made. An error code narrows the possible causes, but the diagnosis confirms which one it is.

What the decision depends on

  • What the error code or symptom points to, confirmed by diagnosis.
  • Where water is leaking from: a hose, a seal or the tub itself.
  • The written estimate compared with the cost of a new dishwasher, including removing the old one and installing the new one with its water and drain connections.
  • The condition of the tub, racks and door.
  • Whether parts are available for your model.

When repair usually makes sense

  • Water stays in the bottom after the cycle.
  • Dishes come out dirty because a pump, spray arm or water supply part isn't working.
  • The door doesn't latch, or the cycle doesn't start.
  • Dishes stay wet because a heating or drying part failed.
  • An error code appears on a dishwasher that is otherwise in good shape.

When replacement is worth considering

  • The tub is cracked or rusted through and leaks.
  • Racks and interior are badly rusted along with other failures.
  • Several major parts have failed together.
  • Parts are discontinued for your model.

Safe checks before you call

  • Clean the filter as your owner's manual describes — a blocked filter often leaves water in the tub.
  • Make sure the drain hose under the sink isn't kinked.
  • Note any error code exactly as it appears, and look it up in the manual.
  • If you see water on the floor, stop running the dishwasher and dry the area. Don't remove the toe kick or access panels.

What the diagnostic visit tells you

A technician comes to you, finds the actual cause and gives you a written estimate before any repair. The $69 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you approve it; if you decide not to repair, the diagnostic is the only charge. Approved repairs carry a 12-month warranty on parts and labor for the same repaired issue.

Our error-code guides cover Bosch E15 and E24 and Whirlpool F9 E1, and there is a separate page for dishwashers that won't drain.
