Refrigerator Not Cooling
A refrigerator that isn't cooling — or is cooling weaker than it used to — is one of the most common refrigerator problems, and the cause isn't always obvious from the symptom alone. Possible causes include restricted airflow around the condenser coils, a fan that isn't circulating air through the fresh-food or freezer compartment, or a control thermostat that isn't reading temperature accurately.
Temperature instability, where the refrigerator seems to cool fine some of the time but drifts warm at other times, may be related to a defrost cycle that isn't completing properly, which lets frost build up and block airflow over the evaporator coil. In other cases, weak or no cooling can point toward the compressor or start system — the sealed component that circulates refrigerant through the cooling system.
Because several different systems can produce a similar "not cooling" symptom, proper diagnosis is needed to identify the actual cause before recommending a repair. If clicking, buzzing, or a refrigerator that runs constantly without ever cooling points you toward the compressor specifically, see our Refrigerator Compressor Repair page for more on that component.
Why is my refrigerator running but not cooling?
A refrigerator that runs but doesn't cool can point to several different issues — restricted airflow, a fan or defrost problem, or in some cases the compressor or start system. We diagnose the exact cause on-site before recommending a repair.
Refrigerator Leaking
Water pooling under or inside a refrigerator can come from more than one source, and the exact point depends on where the water is showing up. A clogged or frozen defrost drain is one of the most common causes — as the refrigerator defrosts periodically, that water is supposed to drain into a pan underneath the unit, and a blockage there can send it onto the floor instead.
Water appearing near the front of the unit may be related to the water line or inlet valve that supplies an ice maker or water dispenser, especially if a fitting isn't sealed properly. If your model has an ice maker, a supply line issue there is also worth ruling out. Condensation can also collect in the drain pan under normal conditions, but it should evaporate on its own rather than accumulating or overflowing.
Because leaks can originate from the defrost system, a water line, or drainage, proper diagnosis is needed to trace the water back to its actual source before recommending a repair.
Why is water leaking from my refrigerator?
Leaks are usually traced to a clogged defrost drain, a water line or valve issue (often connected to an ice maker), or condensation in the drain pan. We inspect each of these during diagnosis to confirm the source before recommending a repair.
Ice Maker Not Making Ice
An ice maker that's producing little or no ice is usually tied to one of a few systems working together — the water supply, the freezer temperature, or the ice maker module itself. If the freezer isn't reaching a cold enough temperature, the ice maker may not cycle correctly even if everything else is working normally.
A restricted water supply line or a water inlet valve that isn't opening fully can also slow or stop ice production, and if your refrigerator has a water filter, a clogged filter can restrict flow the same way. In some cases, the ice maker module itself — including its internal fan — isn't cycling through its harvest process correctly.
This residential ice-maker context is separate from commercial ice machine equipment; for a commercial unit, see our Commercial Ice Machine Repair page instead.
